The word evokes visions of brass warmed by gorgeous patina, well-worn chairs and lasting quality.  Though there may not be a hard and fast definition to what is and what is not, the romantic in me sings it’s delight when considering objects with an aura of history – that have stood the test of time, or have reinvented themselves, and that add warmth and life to a space full of sparkling, spanking new.  I had a glamorous great-aunt who’s life, jewelry, and furnishings whispered in hushed tones about things I will never have the thrill of experiencing.  Those whispers fill my senses and make each piece feel rich with history.

And with the surge of media celebrating times past, we are seeing more and more interest in furniture and accessories from unexpectedly mixed eras.  From Mad Men and Pan Am to the Tudors, and everything in between, eclectic furnishings are in demand.  Go ahead and jump in with a special piece that whispers to you… These are a few of my current obsessions.

What do you think?  A flame-stitched mid-century chair, perfect with a martini after work? Yes, please!  These vintage bar glasses? Fabulous. They offer a nod to a time when cocktails were glamorous.  And when did boring become the norm, anyway?  Why shouldn’t every day feel just a little special?  I want these to be my everyday water, cocktail and everything else glasses.  And then there are all the vintage smoking accessories…  Now, I know nobody smokes in their houses anymore (thank God!), but vintage ashtrays and matchstick holders are so gorgeous that they scream for a second life.  I love to use them for jewelry and desk accessories.  They have such sexy sculptural appeal.  What are your favorite vintage finds?  Check out the slide show for a taste of the vintage beauties currently living at Slate, or, come in and try on a past life… Whatever whispers its secrets in your ear.

Flowers that won't die, Marble heart paperweight, and Delicious candles... Just a taste of the gift ideas we have up our sleeves.

“It has been said that we need just three things in life:  Something to do, Something to look forward to, and someone to love.”  Well, you’re on your own finding the object of your affection, but once you have that under your belt, we recommend keeping said wonder-boy (or girl).  Hmmm… how to do this…..

Flowers? Cliche.  Lasting? Hardly.  Here’s a secret.  Flowers are always sweet, but really only make an impact when they are unexpected.  Let’s get motivated, lovers!  Think outside the box.  We’re here for you.  In that spirit…

Always keep them wanting more.  This is sage advice.  Everyone wants something to look forward to.  And it feels so good to be a thoughtful sweetie-pie!  Shower them with periodic and unexpected gifts and gestures.  Valentine’s Day is nice, and I recommend celebrating with flair.  Skip the common, the expected, the flowers and dinner.  How about something as one-of-a-kind as he is? Something she’ll see everyday that’ll take her back to that moment?  Or, for even greater impact, the weekend after Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to surprise your love-bug with a teensie memento of your amore.  We are abloom with original art, unique gifts, sexy scented candles, pretty/statement jewelry and plenty of ideas for creating memorable moments.

Whether you are a traditionalist, sticking to the hallmark holiday, or prefer to celebrate anything but, we are once again here to make it easy to be thoughtful and romantic.  Come by for ideas, inspiration, gifts, and, (we know you might need it!) help.

So you are almost done with your shopping.  You have gotten just about everyone something, at least.  But you don’t feel done.  There is a nagging feeling that you copped out on getting something for everyone that will actually bring  joy.  Yeah, grandma said she could use some new towels, but no matter how pretty the wrapping, there is no excitement in either the giving or receiving.  Unfortunately, you have no better ideas this year.  You are too busy to worry about it.  You just want to be done.  Going through the motions at Christmas.  Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy, doesn’t it?

While the time is drawing near, the gifts don’t have to feel impersonal or last-minute.  Don’t waste your time and what is left of your sanity trying to find the perfect unique, or sentimental gift at 100 chain stores at the mall.  I have a proposal.  Stop by Slate on your lunch break.  Eat one (or a dozen) of our delicious cheese biscuits, and let us wrap up the end of your shopping worries for you with any of these special gift ideas for less than $100.
And, with gifts under $25, you’ll also find plenty of unique options for the hostesses of all the tacky sweater or glittery Christmas parties you have in the next two weeks, not to mention those perfect “Emergency Gifts” for the person who was thinking about you while you were busy shopping for the ugliest sweater you could find…  We’ll see you soon.  It’ll be fun.  We promise.

News Flash:  November is racing toward a close. Black Friday creeps ever closer…but this year, let’s enjoy it!  Lets shop for inspiration, buy enduring memories, and wrap up magic moments.

Gorgeous Vintage Jewelry. $95-$150

If you are following this blog, I hope you have been to Slate before.  If not, let me introduce you to a place that feels like a new love, an old friend, the comfort of family all tied in a bow.  Slate Interiors is more than unique furniture, sparkling mirrors, enchanting lighting and one-of-a-kind accessories.  We’re like your best friend’s family (you know, the one you secretly wanted to trade yours for?) …  stylish, laid back and a little quirky, but warm and fun and willing to bend over backwards for you.

Orange Alligator Embossed Note cards. $12

And with November bearing down without mercy, we’ve been hard at work with our artists and merchants to bring you exciting, affordable options to inspire your holiday giving.  Who wouldn’t love a piece of original art from a local artist that we can tell you all about?  Or perhaps a hand-blown glass vase that picks up the exact hue of the new throw pillows your mom got at Slate and can’t stop talking about.   Or a unique, statement-making vintage necklace for that sophisticated woman who has everything…

Or for an exquisitely personalized gift, come check out the featured art by the divine Ms. Jennifer Levine, a brilliant and best-selling local artist with stylistically varied and always intriguing pieces. (See our previous posts for more info about her.) This month we’ll be featuring custom-made silhouette art, available before the holidays.  That means you can have your daughter’s sweet profile (or your husbands motorcycle!) produced to your specifications in time to gift it to Grandma and Grandpa, or surprise mom with the most thoughtful memento she’ll never forget.  They look beautiful alone and spectacular in groups. What’s that you say? You’ve been wondering what to put over the sofa for ages? You have three kids?  Ta Da!  Stunning, personal, and timeless memories as art.  Perfect.

Admonishing owl $64

According to an article from the stlye section of the wall street journal last month, every great space has, among other things… an animal? Looking around the spaces within slate, it proves true.  Animals make us smile, lower blood pressure, are personal, unexpected, and just plain charming!  May I suggest an owl? Everywhere I go, I find myself falling for owls.  They are charming, darling and wise.

As pillows, they warm a picture-perfect room with whimsey.  Bookends peek out to offer sage admonishment or hoots of laughter.  And how about an incredibly whimsical pair of andirons?  The amber glass eyes illuminate with the firelight!

Not into owls?  No worries-it’s all about your personality. A beautiful silver teddy bear talc shaker would be sweet in a nursery, or come check us out at slate to find your newest obsession. Whatever your penchant; dogs, monkeys, horses, find a sweet or quirky animal to tuck into your favorite room and notice how you smile whenever your gaze falls upon them. Voila! Instant charm.

Good Times at the Gallery Crawl

Help!  Can you believe that it’s almost the end of October? Already.  So next week already begins the worry and planning, stressing and list-making that always accompanies our Thanksgiving and holiday plans?  I need a drink…  Well, isn’t that handy? There is crisp, bubbly prosecco, refreshing beer and an assortment of delicious accoutrements waiting for your stress reduction pleasure at your favorite neighborhood… interiors venue?  Yup.  Free drinks and we have art too!  Come on, does it get any better?

Feature Artist Michelle Rivera with Husband Frank Kosarek

Those of you who came to October’s gallery crawl may have met Michelle Rivera, our feature artist for the month.  Michelle is a local radiologist who began painting and just fell in love with the brush.  She and her husband Frank were here to meet all our friends and chat with them about her passion.  In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, 20% of all her sales were donated to the Susan G. Komen foundation.

For November, we are working with our artists and merchants to bring you more delicious options for holiday shopping.  Affordable art, jewelry, and one-of-a-kind accessories abound to make for happy holiday gift giving.  Look for more about our feature artists in future blogs – coming soon.

Rob Hartnett and Lori Jones

You come into Slate every other day?  Well, hey Norm, it wouldn’t be the same without you!  You’ve never been to Slate?  Gasp!  Do you know what you have been missing?  Come on in, grab a glass of bubbly and let “Norm” show you around.  Or just do a lap or two with your sweetie pie.  Make sure to stop and chat with the girls while you’re here.  We’re a bit more like a certain sitcom than a stuffy furniture boutique.  Here everybody knows your name, and we are always glad you came.  So come in, make some new friends, bring some old ones, and lets celebrate the arrival of November… and free refills.  Cheers.
